-다가 puts you in the middle of one thing when the meeting happens, and two uses show here. One is meeting people during a stretch of your life — trainee days, the same part-time job, a club that grew out of raising and eating pork. The other is 있다가 만나다, waiting a while and then meeting, as in 'let's meet in a bit'. The first is about how you came to know someone; the second is only about timing.
