The 다가 clause is what you were in the middle of when you went up. In these lines that is practising a move right up until going on stage, looking around at the ceiling and then heading up, going back and forth about whether to go up and finally going. It also covers value: something dipping and then climbing back, and asking why it rose after that dip.
