바르다 is applying something spreadable — butter on bread, cream cheese, sunscreen, body lotion, makeup. The -어 verb in front says how: 펴 바르다 is spreading it out flat, 찍어 바르다 is dabbing it on, 챙겨 바르다 is making a point of putting it on. It is the ordinary verb for skincare as well as for food.
