나누다 does two jobs at once: splitting something into parts and handing it round. Splitting shows up as -에 따라 나누다, dividing according to a criterion (이 동네 병원은 분야에 따라 나누어져 있어요, 부의 격차에 따라 나눠서 부담한단 말이에요). Sharing shows up as 나눠 먹다, dividing food among people (얼마 안 돼 나눠 먹을 게 없어, 집에 와서 세 번에 걸쳐 나눠 먹었습니다). It extends to conversation too — 이야기를 나누다 is having a talk together ([7명 모두 모여 나누었던 이야기들]).
