-아/어서 supplies the reason or the step before, and 헤어지다 covers both parting for the day and ending a relationship. The relationship sense dominates here: 굉장히 많이 싸워서 헤어진 커플 'a couple who split after fighting a lot', 이 사람이 질려서 헤어졌어 'I broke up because I got sick of him'. The plain-parting sense shows in 밖에 나가서 헤어질 때까지도, 'right up until we said goodbye outside'.
