A cause clause with "-아서/-어서" running into 망하다, "go under, be ruined, flop". The subject can be a business — construction firms that went bust when the IMF crisis hit, an outfit too big to fail — or a person's plan or appearance: stories about a haircut going wrong. The stock scolding line 이래서 망하다, "this is exactly why you fail", turns up twice, once said about the speaker and once at someone else.
