모으다 is bringing scattered things together into one place: data held centrally (내 정보를 네가 왜 중앙에 가서 모아서 보관을 해?), documents filed together (따로 철해서 모아야 되고), and above all money — 한 달에 조금 조금씩 돈을 넣어서 모으는 통장을, 주식을 사서 모을 수 있게 만들어 놓은. Pooling people's contributions uses 힘을 합쳐서 모으다: 1만 명이 힘을 합쳐서 모은 금액으로. The -아서/어서 supplies the means of collecting.
