The clause in front gets you into position and 서다 is standing there: go stand behind whoever you think will win, stand evenly spaced apart, go out and stand for a bit, stand in front of it. One line uses the performing sense, where standing means appearing on stage because people kept inviting them. Note that 서다 also means to stop or come to a halt.
