터지다 is bursting: a pipe that froze and split, something overheating and going off. It stretches to a crisis breaking out — one line uses it of the Lehman collapse — and to laughter bursting out of you, which is what 어이없어서 터지다 means, cracking up because something was too absurd. -어서 always gives the cause.
