열다 opens a door, a lid, or a container, and the -아서/어서 gives the reason or the care taken: 문이 잠겨있지 않아서 열어 보니까, 조심해서 연 다음에 라면을 이렇게 휘적휘적해요, 경찰관이 문을 노크해서 열고 나왔으니까. It also means convening or holding something — 이번 임시 금통위는 위험해서 연 것 같지는 않고 is about calling an emergency policy meeting. 열리다 is the door opening by itself; 열다 is you opening it.
