Attaches to a verb or adjective and says the action or quality is required for things to work out: pieces "need to match", weekday meals "need to be quick". It also covers rules and advice, as in the grammar lesson line saying verbs should be used with a certain ending. Its near twin 어야 하다 means the same thing but sounds a shade more formal and written; 어야 되다 is what people actually say out loud, which is why it dominates these subtitles. In questions it asks whether something is really necessary ("do I need your permission?").
