으라고 하다

tell someone to do something

Reports an order or a request that was given to somebody: 계란 맥반석 계란 꼭 먹으라고 했는데 'I told you to eat the baked eggs', 근데 왜 이런 사진 찍을 때 웃으라고 하시는 거예요? 'why do they tell us to smile for these photos?' In the conditional it sets up a hypothetical instruction — 제일 좋아하는 여행지 꼽으라고 하면 'if you asked people to name a favourite destination.' 라면서요 is the contracted complaint form: 형이 여기 드러누으라면서요!! 'you're the one who told me to lie down!'
