으려고 하다

try to; mean to

Says you are making an effort at something, or that you meant to: 근데 가급적이면 이제 밤에는 안 먹으려고 하지 'I try not to eat at night.' Three lines here are 려고 했는데, the shape for a plan that did not come off — 나도 어제 쫄쫄 굶으려고 했는데 못 굶었어 'I meant to starve myself yesterday too but couldn't.' The casual spoken swap is 려고 그러다, which puts 그러다 where 하다 stands and means the same thing.
