벌다 is earning money, almost always with 돈 as its object. The adverb says how much or how hard: 엄청나게 벌다 "earn a fortune", 크게 벌다 "make big money", 힘들게 벌다 "earn it the hard way" — 자기, 돈 힘들게 버네? is a wry remark about someone working for every won. 어떻게 번 거예요? "how did they make it?" is the question these lines keep circling. For a salary that comes to you rather than money you go out and make, Koreans use 받다.
