Presents a result as something that happened through circumstance rather than a decision the speaker made: coming to respect someone, eventually finding out, ending up having to be thankful. Korean speakers reach for it constantly to sound modest about their own situation, so a student "came to visit" rather than "decided to visit". Contrast 게 하다 and 게 만들다, which say somebody made it happen; 게 되다 says it just turned out that way. With a question word it asks how something will turn out.
