게 매기다

매기다 is assigning a value to something: putting things in order of preference, grading people, setting a tariff rate, levying tax at a high rate. It always needs the thing being assigned — an order, a grade, a rate — so it is not simply 'to judge'. The -게 slot says on what basis, most often 어떻게.
