보내다 means both sending something and spending time, and both senses are here. Sending: 향수는 빼고 보낼게요 "I'll leave the perfume out and send it", "혼자 여행 갔다 와" 하고 보내줘요 "I tell her to go travel alone, and send her off". Spending: 뭘 하고 보냈어? "what did you do with your time?", 맛있는 거 먹고 보낸다 "we spend it eating something good". The -고 clause is what came first, or what filled the time.
