is doing it right now, ongoing

Marks an action in progress, matching English -ing: 살고 있습니다 "I'm living", 일하고 있어요 "she's working", 기다리고 있을까? "is it waiting?". Spoken Korean also uses it to needle someone about what they are doing at that moment — 무슨 소리 하고 있어 "what on earth are you talking about". Do not mix it with 어 있다, which describes a state left over after the action finished (앉아 있다, to be seated); 고 있다 is the action itself still running. The honorific form is 고 계시다.
