고 말다

ended up happening, regrettably

Marks an outcome as final and usually unwelcome. Five lines here are the past 고 말았다, which lands like English 'ended up': 하늘로 올라가고 있던 호랑이는 땅으로 떨어져 죽고 말았어요, 그깟 감기라고 생각했는데 패배하고 말았죠 'I thought it was just a cold, and I lost.' In the present it can instead mean doing only that much and stopping there — 명절에 그러니까 잠깐 보고 말아야 돼 'at holidays you should only see them briefly and leave it.'
