고 피하다

"-고" links what someone thought or did to 피하다 "avoid, dodge". A common shape here is a quoted reaction plus the avoiding: he said "I'm really shooting" and dodged, they'd think "this is insane" and steer clear. It also chains plain avoidance to something else — don't make eye contact and keep out of his way today, hitting and dodging and kicking, avoiding it out of concern for privacy. Compare 어서 피하다, which names the manner or cause; -고 just puts one action before the other.
