자 하다

say lets, with the particle dropped

The same as 자고 하다, reporting a suggestion, with the quotative 고 left off the way speakers do: 야 '셋'에 시작하자 했지? 'I said we'd start on three, right?' It often reports the speaker's own resolve rather than words said to anyone — 아, 여기까지 하고 이제 내일 하자 하고 한 3시쯤 'I decided to stop there and do it tomorrow.' 듣자하니 is a frozen phrase of the same shape meaning 'from what I hear.'
