리 means 'reason, likelihood', so -(으)ㄹ 리 없다 is 'there's no reason it would be so' — flat disbelief: 그럴 리 없어 'no way, that can't be', 저 사람이 왕자일 리 없어 'there's no way he's the prince', 계획대로 될 리 없음 'no chance this goes to plan'. It is about how likely the speaker judges something to be, not about physical impossibility, which would be 안 되다 or 못하다.
