지내다 is getting on with life over a stretch of time, and -(으)면서 says what fills it. The stock question 뭐 하면서 지내세요? — 'what have you been up to lately?' — appears in several forms here, and the answers use the same frame (하고 싶은 일을 하면서 지내고 있어요, 집에서 잘 쉬면서 지냈어요). It is broader than 뭐 해요?, which asks only about right now.
