Attached to a quantity, this marks the figure as bigger than you would expect: a full seventy per cent, a share issue as large as twenty per cent, sixty-nine and a half per cent of people, a forty per cent chance of a downturn. It is how a speaker signals surprise at a number rather than just reporting it. Most of these lines come from statistics being quoted in commentary.
