-ㄴ다고 quotes the reason or claim behind someone's coming: 엄마가 나 응원한다고 오면 'if mum comes saying she's here to cheer me on', 악몽을 꾼다고 와서 'comes over because you're having a nightmare'. It also does a flat denial of cause — 우리가 원한다고 오지 않는다 'it doesn't come just because we want it', 문을 연다고 오는 게 아니죠 'they don't come merely because you open the door'.
