"-는데" lays out the background, and 놀다 covers everything Korean does with "play" — hanging out, having fun, and not working. Most lines pair it with 놀러 가다 or 놀러 오다, visiting somewhere for pleasure: we're having a joint birthday party, come along; I only went to New York for shoots, never for fun; can I go out to play now training's done? Two lines use the not-working sense — I'm nearly eighty, what would I do sitting idle; we're cutting thousands and you're loafing?
