-는지 packs an open question — what, when, why, whether — into a larger sentence, and 물어보다 is the act of asking it: 수업이 언제 끝나는지 물어볼 때 쓰는 표현이에요, 부모한테 어떻게 죽었는지 물어봐. The polite way to ask permission to ask is -는지 물어봐도 돼요?, which turns up twice here (메뉴 뭐였는지 물어봐도 돼요? 궁금해요). 물어보다 is the everyday word; 질문하다 is what you would use in a formal setting.
