거 stands in for "something" and the describing word in front names the kind: 단 거 "something sweet", 짭조름한 거 "something salty", 매콤한 거 "something spicy". This is how Koreans talk about cravings without naming an actual dish. Note that 먹다 covers drinking as well — 빡센 거 먹으면 안 되는데 here is about strong alcohol, not food. 거 is simply the spoken form of 것.
