With 알았다 in the past, this reports a belief that turned out wrong: 저는... 숙취해소제인 줄 알았는데 'I thought it was a hangover remedy', 나 남길인 줄 알았는데 아니었... 'I thought it was Nam-gil, but no.' In the present it means realizing what you ought to — 쪽팔린 줄 알아야지 'you should know that's shameful.' With a number word it becomes a challenge: 몇 개인 줄 알아? 'do you know how many there were?'
