-냐고 quotes a question and 물어보다 is the asking. A question word inside names what you wanted to know: 이름이 뭐냐고 물어보실 수 있나요? (could you ask what her name is), 기분이 어땠냐고 물어보셨잖아요. With no question word it becomes yes-or-no — 맞냐고 물어보셨거든요 (they asked whether that was right). The blunt -냐 inside is fine even in a polite sentence, because it is quoted rather than said to the listener.
