라고 주다

give it as ___, or give it so you'll do ___

라고 does two jobs. As a label it says what the thing was given as: 계란찜을 하나 서비스라고 주시더라고요 'they gave me a steamed egg as a freebie'. As a quoted instruction — the more common reading in these lines — it says what the giver wants done with it: 카드도 제 카드 쓰라고 주고 'I even give him my card to use', 뭐 하라고 준 거야? 'what did they give me this for?', 성공하지 말라고 주시는 거 같은데요? 'it's like they gave it to me so I'd fail'.
