-러 gives the purpose and 다니다 makes it a habit — not one trip but going about doing it over and over: 놀러 다니다 "go out and about having fun", 보러 다니다 "go round looking at things", 심부름하러 다니다 "spend the day running errands". Compare -러 가다, which is a single trip for that purpose. One line shows the harder, older use: 떡을 팔러 다니며 생계를 유지했죠, going from market to market selling rice cakes to get by.
