Aimed at someone else it becomes a mild telling-off for not doing the obvious thing: 나한테 먼저 물어봐야지! 'you should have asked me first!', 알아야지! 'you're supposed to know that!'. It builds on 어야 하다 'must', with the 지 making it sound like a point both of you already accept. After a bright-vowel stem it appears as 아야지.
