In these lines it only ever turns up inside 이러고 and 그러고 — 'doing it this way' and 'doing it that way' — used to sum up an action or an attitude and then move on: how am I supposed to do this like this, and then a lot of time passed, Americans want to stand out like that, people who go 'eh, I don't care' and smoke at school. The one to memorise is 그러고 보니, 'now that I think of it', which opens one of these lines. Treat these as fixed words rather than a piece you attach yourself.
