으면

if / when, after consonant stems

Marks the condition half of a sentence: "if this happens" or "when this is the case". 있으면 is "if there is", 없으면 is "if there isn't", 찍으면 is "if we film". It is fused onto the verb stem, so you will not see it standing alone in a line. Two very frequent set phrases use it: -으면 되다 ("that's all you need to do") and -으면 안 되다 ("you mustn't"). Stems ending in a vowel take the shorter -면 instead, which is the same ending.
