Marks the topic, after a consonant

Puts a word up front as what the sentence is about — "as for today", "as for right now", "as for your marriage". It very often carries an implied contrast: saying "today is..." quietly suggests other days are different. This is the shape after a consonant; 는 is the same marker after a vowel. Against 이/가, which picks out the specific doer, this one sets the frame that the rest of the sentence answers.
