Ends a sentence to supply background the listener has no way of knowing: 가격도 괜찮거든요 is "the prices are good, you see", 알람 세 개를 맞췄거든요 is "I used to set three alarms, actually". It is the mirror image of 잖아요: 잖아요 says "as you know", while 거든요 says "as you didn't know". Speakers also use it to open a story, leaving the sentence to lead into what happened next. Drop the 요 for the casual 거든, which among friends can sound a bit defensive, like "well, that's because…".
