On a number it says the amount is more than you expected — 3,498 troops, twenty whole years, how many times. On a plain noun it does nearly the opposite, shrugging the choice off as good enough: cooking him a proper homemade meal while you're there, eating like this. It also works as a loose 'or' when listing people or options, as in the line greeting the fan club and everyone else watching. The same shape, three jobs, and the presence of a number is your clue for the first.
