나요

gentle polite question

Asks a question in a soft, curious way rather than a direct one: 모두 이해하셨나요? 'did everyone follow that?', 제 화면이 잘 보이시나요? 'can you see my screen okay?'. Compared with plain 어요? it feels less like demanding an answer, which is why hosts and teachers use it when speaking to an audience. It attaches to verb stems (가나요) and to past forms of anything (됐나요, 지내셨나요). Drop the 요 and it becomes 나, which sounds like wondering to yourself instead.
