'I hear they do X…' raising a topic

-ㄴ다던데 offers up something the speaker was told, and hands it to the listener to confirm or discuss: 인도인들이 금을 그렇게 좋아한다던데 'I hear Indians are really fond of gold.' Because it is hearsay, the speaker is not on the hook if it turns out wrong. Adding 요 makes it polite — 그래서 가면 된다던데요 'they say you just walk out and that's it.'
