reports what someone said or thinks

Wraps a plain present-tense action so it can be reported: 먹는다고 해요 is "you say 'eat'", 해주신다고 나오셨대요 is "they came out saying they'd make it themselves", 된다고 생각합니다 is "I think it has to be". The verb after it names the source — 하다 for said, 생각하다 for thought, 들었다 for heard. Use this shape for action verbs in the present; descriptions and past events take -다고 instead, and bare nouns take -라고. It also appears with 고 dropped in casual retorts meaning "I said…", pushing back when the listener didn't catch it.
