'Under the pretext of doing X'

-ㄴ답시고 reports the reason someone gave for an action while making clear the speaker does not buy it: 이게 어떻게 보면 남을 위한답시고 사실 도와주는 건데 'ostensibly for someone else's sake.' It also works on yourself, self-deprecatingly — 저는 자료 만든답시고 좀 봤는데 'I had a look, supposedly to make some materials.' Its whole job is the gap between the stated purpose and what actually happened.
