Plain statement quoted inside a sentence

The bare statement form, used here not to end a sentence but to be quoted inside one. It feeds into 하면 or 그러다 to mean 'if you say...' or 'you said...': if you say you eat it in front of the telly, didn't you say earlier you don't eat sweet things, if you had this at 11pm in the UK. It also fills on-screen captions, which use the same plain form. Adding 고 gives the fuller 는다고, which does the quoting explicitly.
