What do you mean, that?!

It repeats a word the other person just used and pushes back at it, startled or offended: a wolf dog?; inconsiderate, you say?; what do you mean, close her eyes. It is a shortened form of 라니요, and the 요 keeps it polite while everything else about it objects. The word it lands on is always the one the speaker refuses to accept.
