려

Trying to, about to

The trimmed form of 려고, so it means the same thing: trying to send him to the scrapheap, trying to help friends too much, made a t-shirt to celebrate it, was going to talk about the differences. In these lines it is nearly always followed by 하다 or 그러다, which turns it into 'try to' or 'be about to'. 려다 is the same with a twist — attempting something and then being interrupted or failing, as in the line about trying and trying and it never happening.
