of, 's — possession and belonging

Joins two nouns so the first one owns, produces, or belongs to the second: "the highlight of the event", "today's hot news", "someone else's kid", "holidays with relatives". Speakers leave it out whenever the relationship is obvious, so it turns up more in written captions and set phrases than in loose conversation. It also hides inside the short words for "my" and "your", where it has already merged with the pronoun. Despite the spelling, it is pronounced like a short "eh".
