Also spelled yo

Regional-sounding plain 'is'

A regional and old-fashioned flavour of the plain 'to be' ending: she's ninety-eight now, that's not food, that's Yu Jae Seok, right?, it's an easygoing burger. It belongs to the speech of older people and of the southern and central provinces, and in subtitles it signals exactly that unpolished, homely voice. In standard Seoul speech the same sentences would end in 이야, or 이에요 if you were being polite.
